All of our therapists have extensive training and experience in family therapy and consider the impact of family dynamics on health and development with every client we see. Family systems thinking is a core part of how we practice, not a separate specialty.
MCA is often sought out for family and couples therapy and support because we help reduce conflict, improve communication, and strengthen problem-solving in ways that support lasting change. Our work focuses on understanding patterns, shifting unhelpful dynamics, and building healthier ways of relating that support both individual and family well-being.
Ascend Intensive Outpatient Services
Ascend Program
Ascend has been restructured to be more flexible and more financially sustainable for families.
Rather than a fixed schedule or intensity, participants now receive an individualized plan that can adjust over time based on clinical need, readiness, and life demands.
Families can now choose from variable levels of weekly support, with options for in-person and telehealth participation. This allows young adults to remain engaged in treatment while continuing school, work, or other responsibilities.
Pricing has been revised to reduce barriers and support continuity of care, so families are not forced into an all-or-nothing commitment.
Ascend remains a clinically guided program focused on emotional regulation, executive functioning, relational skills, and developmental growth.

EMDR Trauma Recovery
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) in Bethesda and Online
helps the brain reprocess traumatic or distressing memories. Normally, when something upsetting happens, the brain stores the memory in a way that it can be integrated and eventually lose its emotional intensity. But with trauma, memories can get “stuck”they remain vivid, unprocessed, and easily triggered.
In EMDR, the therapist guides the client to recall parts of the disturbing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones). This dual attention seems to activate the brain’s natural information-processing system. Research suggests that it reduces activity in the amygdala (the brain’s alarm center), increases communication between the two hemispheres, and allows the memory to be reconsolidated in a less distressing form.
In short: EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess “stuck” traumatic memories so they feel less emotionally charged and can be stored like ordinary memories.
