Group Therapy

Use this Link for Current Outpatient Groups at MCA
Group therapy offers a unique and powerful opportunity for healing, growth, and connection. By engaging with others who share similar struggles, individuals gain support, insight, and encouragement in a safe, therapeutic environment. If you’ve ever wondered how group therapy works, why group therapy is effective, or what group therapy is like, this page will guide you through what to expect.
Group sessions help participants build emotional resilience, improve communication, and develop healthier coping strategies, all while reducing isolation and fostering a sense of belonging. Why group therapy? Because it offers something individual therapy alone can’t: real-time interaction, feedback, and connection with others on a similar path. Led by skilled therapists, our groups provide diverse perspectives and a supportive space to practice new ways of relating.
Whether you’re addressing mental health challenges, managing stress, or seeking personal development, group therapy at MCA is a transformative experience that promotes insight, self-awareness, and practical skills for lasting change.
Types of Groups We Offer
Psychotherapy (Process) Groups
Process groups focus on emotional insight, connection, and growth.
What it’s like: Group members share thoughts, feelings, and struggles in real time, gaining support and learning from each other.
Why it’s effective: Practicing vulnerability and honest communication in a safe space leads to better self-awareness and stronger relationships.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Groups
DBT groups teach skills to manage emotions, relationships, and stress.
Includes:
-
Mindfulness: Stay present and grounded
-
Emotion Regulation: Understand and manage intense feelings
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Set boundaries and communicate clearly
-
Distress Tolerance: Cope with painful situations without self-harm
Note: While we follow DBT principles, we do not offer a full DBT-adherent program. Our team can help you decide if this is the right level of support for you.
DBT Process Groups
A blend of skills and support.
How it works: Half the session is DBT skills training, and half is group processing using a DBT lens.
Why it helps: This format supports both practical learning and emotional exploration.
Art Therapy Groups
Use creativity to process emotions without needing to “talk it out.”
What it’s like: No artistic skill required. Art-making becomes a way to express feelings, reduce stress, and discover insight.
Why it works: Art therapy is ideal for those who struggle to express themselves verbally.
Executive Function & Goals Groups (EF/G)
Help for teens and young adults struggling with planning, organization, or motivation.
Focus areas:
-
Setting meaningful goals
-
Building routines
-
Managing time and tasks
Why it works: Group members share challenges and strategies while staying accountable in a supportive environment.
CBT/Exposure Therapy Groups
Designed for individuals with anxiety, OCD, or avoidance behaviors.
What it’s like: Learn how thoughts impact emotions and behavior. Practice new coping strategies, including exposure exercises in a supportive group.
Why it’s effective: Facing fears in a structured way reduces anxiety over time and builds confidence.
Group EMDR (G-TEP)
A research-supported group version of EMDR for trauma recovery.
How it works: Using structured worksheets and bilateral stimulation, each person processes experiences at their own pace in a supportive group setting.
Who it’s for: Individuals recovering from collective trauma, recent distress, or high-stress professions (e.g., healthcare, first responders).
Why it helps: Combines EMDR’s brain-based healing with the connection and support of group therapy.
